Question-answering services
Cochrane Clinical Answers: “Practical evidence for healthcare decision making” from the Cochrane Library.
BestBETS: Developed in the Emergency Department of Manchester Royal Infirmary to provide rapid evidence-based answers to real-life clinical questions, using a systematic approach to reviewing the literature. BETs take into account the shortcomings of much current evidence, allowing physicians to make the best of what there is.”
Systematic Reviews
Collections of systematic reviews
Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) contains protocols of Cochrane reviews that are planned or in progress. The Cochrane Library can be found via The Knowledge Network.
Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE) & NHS Economic Evaluation Database (NHS EED): DARE was a database of abstracts of quality assessed systematic reviews produced by the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination. EED was a database of economic evaluations, both completed and in-progress Both are archived since March 2015.
Health Technology Assessment (HTA): a database of health technology assessments, both completed and in-progress. The HTA database is available as part of the Cochrane Library. HTA has been archived since March 2018 and will be re-developed on a new platform.
Ebsco and Ovid Databases
Filters and limits for systematic reviews and more are available on both databases.
On Ovid, use the “publication type” limits in Medline (under “additional limits”) – these are not foolproof, but can be useful. Embase publication type limits are very general, but you can use keywords and subject headings for publication types.
The best way to limit is using saved expert searches in the “Saved searches” area. Filters saved on all NHS Scotland Athens Ovid accounts:
- McMaster Filters Project (Embase, Medline)
- NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, University of York (Medline)
- SIGN (Embase, Medline)
There are currently no filters saved in the NHS Scotland Athens accounts for Ebsco databases
Information on filters is on the website maintained by the InterTASC Information Specialists’ Subgroup which lists both published search filters and research on their development and use. There are many more filters here than those saved on our Ovid accounts, and they are updated more frequently. The site is worth checking out.
