National FGM Centre, 2018. Child abuse linked to faith or belief.
The National FGM Centre has released two YouTube videos discussing child abuse linked to faith or belief (CALFB). The first is an animation telling the story of young boy in the UK who was accused of witchcraft by his aunt and uncle; the second offers advice to professionals about how to work with children who have been accused of witchcraft.
Scottish Government, 2018. Child neglect and sexual abuse of trust: consultation.
The Scottish Government is consulting on proposed changes to the criminal offence of cruelty to children, currently set out in section 12 of the Children and Young Persons (Scotland) Act 1937, with a view to shaping a revised offence of child neglect. They are also consulting on whether to extend the current criminal offence of sexual abuse of trust to cover not just those who look after children in institutional settings or live with/have parental responsibilities and rights for a child, but also other people undertaking regulated work with children outside an institutional setting, such as sports coaches. The deadline for responses is 14 November 2018.
Scottish Parliament, 2018. Children (Equal Protection from Assault)(Scotland) Bill
The Scottish Parliament has introduced the Children (Equal Protection from Assault) (Scotland) Bill, to abolish the defence of reasonable chastisement. The Bill will be considered by Parliament to agree to the general principles before moving to the next stage.
CELCIS, 2018. Reflecting on practice through PRISM
The Centre for excellence for looked after children in Scotland (CELCIS) has published a blog describing the Practice Reflection and Improvement Short Module (PRISM) model for shared learning used by North Ayrshire child protection committee. The model brings together multi-agency partners including social workers, police, health practitioners, teachers, and others to assess how well services work together and use this evidence to improve practice to support better outcomes for children and their families.
Home Office, 2018. FGM campaign materials
The Home Office has published promotional materials to be used to help raise awareness of the harmful health consequences associated with female genital mutilation (FGM) and reinforce that the practice is illegal in the UK. The October 2018 campaign also signposts the NSPCC's 24 hour FGM helpline.
Scottish Government, 2018. Strengthening protection from FGM
The Scottish Government is consulting on plans to strengthen the existing legislative framework for the protection of women and girls from female genital mutilation (FGM), as well as looking at whether there are further steps that should be considered to help strengthen protection for those at risk of FGM. The consultation closes on 04 January 2019.
