Download ebooks straight to your mobile device
We now have available a range of ebooks that can be viewed and/or downloaded to a mobile device or PC. Downloaded ebooks can be accessed offline for a set period of time - usually up to 28 days - before they disappear from the device.
These books are available to any member of NHSGGC staff and will require users to have an Adobe Digital Editions username/password and a NHSGGC Athens login details. Both are free and you can register for them by clicking the links.
Books can be downloaded onto any PC or IOS/Android mobile devices. This includes both tablets and smartphones. However, they cannot be downloaded onto traditional Kindles or Kindle Paperwhites due to restrictions by Amazon.
What titles do we have?
We are adding to the number and range of titles all the time, with an increasing number of core texts being available. Titles are accessible via the NHS Scotland's Library Search
Most of the titles will be accessible to any member of NHS Scotland staff, but there are some which are only for NHSGGC staff or other individual Health Boards. This will be indicated when you look for the book via Library Search.
If there is a title that you think would be useful in ebook format, please tell your local NHSGGC library and it will be put forward for consideration for purchase.
How do I access ebooks?
If you wish to download ebooks onto a mobile device, you will need the Bluefire ereader app. This can be obtained free of charge from either iTunes or Google Play. Having downloaded the app, when you access it for the first time you will be asked for your Adobe Digital Editions username/password. However, you should only have to put this in the first time you access the app.
Some of the books that are only available to NHS GGC staff are from a vendor called MyiLibrary. There is a guide on how to use MyiLibrary which requires you set up a MyiLibrary account, but this does allow you to reserve items that might be out on loan and also export the details of the book into reference management software, such as RefWorks.
Please note that due to licence restrictions some of our ebooks may not be available in downloadable format, but all of them can be viewed online 24/7.
Help and advice
Your local NHSGGC Site library will be able to help you with most of your questions about our ebooks. However, they will not be able to offer support in regards to Bluefire, or issues caused by individual mobile devices.
